Todd Talk January 2016

Executive Director, Todd Ballance

Even though we are closed for normal visitation during the month of January, the staff, board, and volunteers have a lot on our plates!  Behind the scenes we have been and will be busy in several areas.

Education is almost ready to announce the 2016 Calendar of Events.  Mr. Ericson and team have been compiling an impressive list of events throughout the 2016 season designed to entertain and educate folks with a wide variety of interests.  Stay Tuned for more information!  The education department continues to conduct the important research on the Site’s past and provide enriching articles for our eNewsletter.  We are also proud to announce that the museum interpreters have achieved a milestone!  TripAdvisor reviewers provided 216 reviews on Historic St. Luke’s at an average ranking of nearly 5 stars!  Great jobs everyone!  We plan to visit three different historic sites across Virginia in January:  Agecroft Hall, St. John’s Church (Richmond), Historic Christ Church (Irvington), and Historic Jamestowne.  These visits will provide our staff with seeing how others operate their sites and determine if we have areas of improvements.  Last year’s trips proved eye-opening and educational, besides we want to strengthen our relations with partnering sites and museums.  What better way to accomplish that?

Marketing has been preparing to launch all of our special event announcements via social media, our official and partner web sites, and press releases for traditional media outlets.  Just wait until you see what we have in-store!  You may have also noticed our new web site launched in November.  In partnership with our electronic media marketing consultants, Proximo Marketing Solutions, we launched a more user-friendly and attractive web site.  Let us know what you think of it!

Operations is proud to announce the completion of our recent Grounds, Bridge, and Ponds Renovation project.  If you visited us between October and January you may have noticed all of the work underway in the ancient roadway, ponds, bridge, and walkways.  We invite you to return this spring and enjoy the glorious improvements.  We wish to thank long-standing supporter and friend of HSLR Lawrence Pitt for being project manager on this important project and our contractors for such a fantastic job well done.  Stay tuned for more information on this and other projects and events as they develop.  On January 15th the flowers will be removed once more from St. Luke’s Memorial Park Cemetery.  If you have any questions, please contact us at the museum administration building.  Collin and Gloria will be busy later this month shopping and restocking the gift shop for the year with alluring new merchandise.  Inventory is constantly rotating each season so be sure and stop by.  Wedding inquiries have briskly increased over the holiday season.  Now is the time to check our availability and book your special day before someone else does.  Call Collin Norman to schedule a meeting to discuss your particular needs.

Development continues to receive 100% tax deductible annual fund contributions from you, our stakeholders, part of the recently mailed November 2015 annual fund mailing and GivingTuesday online campaigns.  To date we received 102 individual contributions.  Your love of Virginia’s Oldest Church shines through with your financial commitments of support.  We wish to thank you for the faith and trust you place in us to continue stewarding and sharing the important artifacts and stories that make us a true National Historic Landmark and Shrine.  We continue seeking more private contributions from folks like you, corporations, and foundations as the needs of the annual fund remain throughJune 30th, 2016 – the end of our fiscal year.  You may soon receive an annual reminder on your membership and two more annual fund mailing pieces – one in March and the other in May.  We want to make sure to keep in touch with you and share what we are doing here at HSL.
